Dr Andrew Hughes

Dr Andrew Hughes is a neurologist with a clinical and research interest in movement disorders. After completing advanced training in neurology in Australia, Dr Hughes trained in Movement Disorders at University College and Middlesex Hospital, and the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases, London. He has experience in a wide range of extra-pyramidal disorders and has a special interest in the accurate diagnosis of parkinsonian disorders, the pharmacotherapy of Parkinson's disease, the neuropathology of parkinsonian disorders; and the use of botulinum toxin in the treatment of focal dystonias and spasticity. He has a  Doctorate of Medicine from The University of Melbourne.

He is head of the Movement Disorders program at the Austin Hospital and is neurologist to the voice clinic, Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital. He has been involved in numerous multi-centre international and Australia–wide studies of pharmacotherapy in Parkinson’s disease, restless leg syndrome and aspects of treatment with botulinum toxin.  He is active in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, lecturing within the FRACP training program and the National Brain School to advanced trainees in Neurology. Dr Hughes is also the current Chair of the Movement Disorders Clinical Research and Trials Group, Movement Disorder Society of Australia.
