Professor Francis Louis Mastalgia

Professor Mastalgia is Professor of Neurology, University of Western Australia, Consultant Neurologist, Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre, Director, Centre for Neuromuscular and Neurological Disorders, University of Western Australia, and Director of Clinical Research, Australian Neuromuscular Research Institute, Perth, Western Australia.

Professor Mastalgia has enjoyed a distinguished medical career. Awarded the Saw Research Fellowship and F.A. Hadley Travelling Fellowship early in his career Frank pursued his research interests in Australia and overseas, firstly via a Clinical and Research Fellowship, Department of Neurology and Muscular Dystrophy Group Research Laboratories, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, followed by a Clinical Fellowship, Department of Neurology, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA, in 1970 and afterwards by appointment as Academic Registrar, The National Hospital for Nervous Diseases, London, 1970 before returning to Perth as Assistant Neurologist, Royal Perth Hospital, 1971-1977.

He accepted clinical and academic appointments as a Senior Lecturer, Department of Medicine, University of Western Australia, 1971-1974 before returning overseas in 1974 under a Research Fellowship, Institute of Neurology, London, UK, 1974/1975 and as Honorary Clinical Assistant, University Department of Neurology, The National Hospital for Nervous Diseases, London, 1974 - 1975.

Returning to Australia he was appointed Relieving Neurologist, Repatriation General Hospital, 1975-1977, and Associate Professor of Medicine, University of Western Australia, 1975-1977, 1980-1982 interspersed by appointments as Professor of Experimental Neurology, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, U.K., 1977-1980, Deputy Director, Muscular Dystrophy Group Research Laboratories, Regional Neurological Centre, Newcastle General Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, 1977-1980, and Consultant Neurologist, Newcastle Area Health Authority (Teaching), UK, 1977-1980.

As Head, Department of Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology, Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, 1982-87, 1997-1998, Head, Department of Medicine, University of Western Australia, 1993/95, and Director of CNND and Director of Clinical Research ANRI, Professor Mastaglia has established a reputation as a leading international figure in neuromuscular research.
