Professor Peter Reilly AO
Director of Neurosurgery Royal Adelaide Hospital
Professor Reilly was awarded an Order of Australia in 2002 for services to the advancement of neurosurgery through clinical practice, research, education, and professional organisations, and in the prevention and treatment of head injuries. Over a distinguished career he has played a leading role in upgrading the practice of neurosurgery in various hospitals in Adelaide, and has assisted in implementing improvements to the System of Neurotrauma Care in South Australia. He is the author of three major neurosurgical textbooks.
In the University of Adelaide Department of Surgery, he has progressed from Clinical Lecturer, 1976, through to Clinical Senior Lecturer, 1980-1995, Associate Professor, 1995, to Professor. His clinical appointments include Senior Staff Specialist, since 1980, Director, Neurosurgical Research, 1985-1994, and since 1994, Head, Department of Neurosurgery, Royal Adelaide Hospital. He is Visiting Neurosurgeon at the Flinders Medical Centre, the Adelaide Children's Hospital, and the Royal Darwin Hospital. In addition, Professor Reilly is neurosurgeon and neurosurgical representative of Australian Craniofacial Unit, and Member of the Adelaide Head Injury Research Group.
Professor Reilly has helped to promote neurosurgical teaching in Vietnam, and served elsewhere in South East Asia as a neurosurgeon in multidisciplinary craniofacial teams.
He has held senior positions within the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons: Neurosurgical Society of Australasia representative, 1994-1997; Chairman, Board of Neurosurgery, 1991-1994, and Member, 1989-1991; Examiner in Neurosurgery, since 1996; Supervisor of Neurosurgical training in South Australia, 1994-2000; current Chairman of South Australian Trauma Committee. Neurosurgical Society of Australasia: President, 1996-1998; Vice-President, 1993-1996; Executive Member, 1988-1993; as Neurosurgical Board Member and Chairman of the Board.
Professor Reilly was instrumental in many critical changes in the education of neurosurgeons within Australasia; Chairman of Trauma Committee, 1998-2001; Chairman, Research Foundation, 1998-2001; Chairman, CME Committee, since 1999; International Chairman, Asia-Pacific Consortium for Head Injury Management, since 1998; Treasurer, Asian Australasian Neurosurgical Society, since 1999; Executive member, International Neurotrauma Society, since 2001.
