The establishment of the Faculty of Pain Medicine within the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 1998, incorporating true multidisciplinary representation from other medical specialties, is an important and innovative advance in dealing with the management of acute, chronic non-malignant and cancer pain which collectively remain one of society's major problems.

Fellows of this Faculty have a wide knowledge of the clinical, biopsychosocial and humanitarian perspectives of all aspects of pain. Numbering over 180, Fellows include anaesthetists, psychiatrists, rehabilitationists, neurosurgeons and physicians with the majority working part of the time in multidisciplinary pain clinics around the country.

Many are actively involved in investigator-initiated clinical studies, and to a lesser degree, industry sponsored clinical trials. Professor Robert Helme serves on the NTA Management Board as the Pain representative with Dr Julia Fleming acting in the role as alternate representative.
